Frontgate

A front door of a Chinese Buddist temple, usually with three gates. It is also called "mountain gate" because in ancient China most Buddhist temple were established in forests on mountains. The Chinese sound of "mountain gate" is as assonance of "three gates". "Three gates" here implies the three things leading to enlightenment: compassion, wisdom, and expedient means. Relying on the Buddha's compassion, the Dharma's wisdom, and expendient means taught by the Sangha, people are able to enter the way of perfect enlightement through the gate of "Three Jewels."

Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha

Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Skt.) is often referred to, because of his vow to not achieve Buddhahood until "all the Hells are empty", as the Bodhisattva of the Hell beings while his vow actually encompasses all sentient beings. Therefore, he is also known as Earth Store Bodhisattva or Di Zang Bodhisattva in China and Jizo Bosatsu in Japan. The name of this Bodhisattva means "the one who encompasses the earth". Earth means stillness, hardness, stability, vastness and versatility. It represents our mind which creates all dharma and accommodates all matters. It is the foundation on which everything grows, including the Buddhist Way. Store means deepness, profundity and subtleness. It represents the immeasurable treasures. As Earth Store Sutra was sermoned by Shakyamuni to his mother in Prayastrimsat, (not on Earth!) this Sutra is also known as the Sutra of filial piety. If morality is the first step in cultivating Buddhist Way, filial piety is the first step in morality. That is why this Sutra is so important for all Buddhist beginners.

Main Hall

The denomination of the Main Hall in every Chinese Buddhist temples as "Da Xiong Bao Dian" or the Hall of the Exalted Hero was according to the Shurangama Sutra. In which it is said that “May the exalted hero’s awesome strength, his kindness and compassion, Search out and dispel even the most subtle of my doubts.(3:223)" “Causing me to quickly attain the supreme enlightenment, And sit in the Bodhimanda of the worlds of the ten directions.(3:225)" These are words of his disciples such as Ven. Ananda to eulogize the Sakyamuni Buddha's wisdom and awesome strength which are able to conquer the evils or resentment.

The Main Hall is the core of a Buddhist temple, in which Dharma services and workships are primarily undertaken here. Inside the Main Hall the Portrait of the Gandavyuha Three Saints are enshrined and workshiped. The statue of Sakyamuni Buddha is enshrined in the midpoint with Bodisattva Manjusri and Bodisattva Samantabhadra (or Bodhisattva Visvabhadra) repsectively in His right and left side.In addition, Bodhisattva Skanda (Wei Tuo, and sometimes called Veda, or Idaten in Japan) and other devas who have taken refuged in Buddha and vowed to protect the Buddha-dharma and sangha.

There are no official stories about how Skanda was accepted into the Chinese Buddhist pantheon, or how he was given the present form of a Chinese general. Some suggest that Skanda might have come from Hinduism as the deity Kartikeya, who bears the title Skanda. Bodhisattva Skanda in Chinese Buddhist temple plays a role as Dharma protecting deities who are guardians of the sangha from evils.

法堂

Dharma Hall

Dining Hall
