The Abbess - Venerable Master Chan-Shuen

上 常 下 順 法師為台灣苑裡人，年二十二於基隆歸依三寶，上 印 下 順 導師為証明師，年二十八親近 上 聖 下 印 老和尚，逾二年於霧峰萬佛寺披剃依止老和尚座下，並於是年受具足戒於台北吉祥寺。

Venerable Chang Shuen was born in Yuen-Li in Taiwan. At the age of 22, she embraced Buddhism and took refuge under Venerable Yin Shuen. At 28 , she followed Venerable Sheng Yin and two years later, was tonsured at the Temple of Ten-Thousand Buddhas in Woo-Fung, serving under the Master and in the same year, took the complete vow of precepts at the Zi-Siang Temple in Taipei.

越後深嚐法味，卒業日本佛教大學，性好天台與止觀，行却宗淨土。又遵長老之囑佈教於台中電台、十方叢林書院訓導、中華佛教學院教務及訓導，並委為台中慈明寺總務、慈明講堂、聖願寺紐西蘭慈明寺監院、慈明商工董事等職。

Since that time, she has a good grounding in Buddhist teaching, and attended the Buddhist University in Japan. While she greatly admires the teaching of Tian-Tai and Zi-Kuan, she practises the Pure Land doctrines.

Following the instructions of her elders, she preached Buddhism on Air at Taichung Radio, acted as an instructor of disciplines at the Shi-Fang-Chung-Lin College, and was in charge of academic affairs and discipline at the Chung-Hwa Buddhist College. At the same time, she was in charge of the general affairs of the Tsi Ming Temple in Taichung, and she was Governor of the Tsi Ming Dharma Hall, Sheng Yuan Temple, the Tsi Ming Temple of New Zealand, and Director of Tsi Ming Commercial and Industrial School.

歲月荏苒，二十八年光陰流逝，長老於年前西遊，鴻業遂分傳續，法師則任高雄聖願、紐西蘭慈明兩寺住持，兼任高雄財團法人聖印文教基金會董事長。法師傳續長老遺業，分燈兩地，法蔭後學，秉持戒芬慕追乃師風節。

Times flies, 28 more years passed. Venerable Sheng Yin passed away some years ago.(Went to the Western Pure Land). The organisation that he built up were passed on to the various disciples. Venerable Chang Shuen became Abbess of the Sheng Yuan Temple in Kaohsiung, and the Tsi Ming Temple in New Zealand. At the same time, she is also the Chairman of Kaohsiung Sheng Yin Educational Trust. Venerable Chang Shuen continues the work of Venerable Sheng Yin, spreading Lord Buddha's teaching in both Taiwan and New Zealand. She nurtures the new learners with the teaching of the Lord Buddha, observes strict precepts, following the footsteps of her honourable Master, Venerable Sheng Yin.
